BIG Kunst+Bau / The Muse Has Had It!
In memory of women academics who were not honored and whose achievements the University of Vienna failed to recognize.
"It was clear from the very beginning that she had to be a feisty figure. The gesture of the fist isn't violent, it's a gesture of confidence which could equally stand for "Hurray!" as it could for "It's the end!" or "It's over!" It should represent the women who have been ignored or denied even though they have been making concrete contributions to the university for centuries. And not just a minority... it was really a lot of women.
The text on the first plinth will explain that my piece intends to highlight this discrimination and honour the women of the university. The second text is a very important aspect of the piece and features statements on the subject by various university bodies such as the Office for Women and Equality and the Institute of Contemporary History.
One of the women I interviewed said how wonderful it is that suddenly, after years of nothing, the floor of the university is being dug up. Many saw the fact that this is even possible as a strong symbol." (Iris Andraschek)
